The Healing of the Woman with Issue of Blood

In the modern age, if we hear of a woman with issue of blood, we think "poor her", and pay it no more mind.  However, two thousand years ago, such a medical problem would have had terrible social consequences: a person who had a sore that would not heal, or who kept bleeding, was ritually impure: they could have no part in the life of the community.  They were outcast.  In this sermon Fr Philip reminds us how, when we feel that we are so wicked and dreadful that God must want nothing to do with us, that is precisely the time when we should turn to Him and be healed.

 

The Healing of Legion

After being healed, the man formerly known as Legion wished to remain with Jesus.  Jesus forbade him, and told him to return to his own family.  Fr Philip considers why this may have been.

After several months hiatus, finally a new sermon from Fr Philip!

 

It will be helpful if you read John 3:13-17 (and a bit before and after, for context) before listening to this sermon.

Fr Philip considers the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.  It's not enough to say "I know that you are the Lord".  You must act on that belief.  You must put your whole life into the hands of God, and become a disciple of and witness to Christ.  In this way you will have life in Christ.  That does not make it easy!  The Gospel does not promise an easy life, but a fulfilled one.  A life of sacrifice, but ultimately worthwhile, because it is a life lived in, and therefore full of, the eternal life of Christ.
